People Are Convinced An Open-World 'Fortnite' RPG Spin-Off Is Coming

Or it could be a MOBA, but it’s almost certainly something different…

You don't need to play Fortnite, at all, to understand it's a very big deal. And with all very big deals, the people behind the very big deals are often working towards what they think their next very big deal will be. And for Epic Games, the makers of Fortnite, that next very big deal could well be a spin-off from the battle royale phenomenon.

At least, that's what a number of players are thinking. According to Dexerto, the dominant prediction for what's coming next for all things Fortnite franchise-related is an open-world spin-off. This is based partially on the fact that Epic Games has already made it clear that it's been toying with an open-world, sandbox-style take on its colourful hit. Many tests have, apparently, already been run.

Fortnite is currently in the grip of an invasion - check the trailer below...

There is also this tweet, from a known leaker of Fortnite-related content. And the answers to the question range from a survival/RPG mode, to a MOBA, to a top-down strategy game. But right there amongst them, getting a lot of likes, is the idea of an open-world spin-off. If they've been testing such a concept, apparently extensively... sure, why not.

Fortnite didn't launch as a battle royale game, of course - first came July 2017's Fortnite: Save the World, more of a tower-defense-style affair. The free-to-play battle royale mode arrived a few months later, became a mega-hit, and that was that. But it shows that this is a franchise that can, and will, try new things - whether that's huge in-game events, multimedia crossovers, or a whole new game set in its storm-ravaged world.

Fortnite is one of the biggest and best free-to-play games out there, right now - like its globe-spanning success wasn't a clear sign of that. Here's a list of other great games you can start playing today, for free.
