A new report alleges that Dragon Age 4 is coming to PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S and X, and players who only own a PlayStation 4 or Xbox One will be left out.
This scoop comes from VentureBeat's Jeff Grubb, who is the industry insider who leaked the existence of Mass Effect: Legendary Edition in early 2020. The admission that the next Dragon Age game is skipping over last-gen systems is surprising, seeing that Mass Effect: Legendary Edition did not get dedicated new-gen releases for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.
Yet, if you consider the storms that the franchise has weathered, it makes sense that BioWare and Electronic Arts would want to smooth over bumps in the road before they've even reached them. Developing for both last-gen and new-gen platforms invites issues like ensuring compatibility across older and slower components as well as the tech that is several steps ahead.

A cross-gen release checks out for multiplayer titles to guarantee that the game gets to as many players as possible. However, the developer has said that it is now "laser-focused on releasing the types of games BioWare has built a reputation on," being single-player games "with rich stories, unforgettable characters, and vast worlds."
Of course, neither BioWare nor Electronic Arts have officially stated that Dragon Age 4 is a PC and new-gen console exclusive, the lead player designer of the franchise looks to be only working on those platforms.
The former creative director of the franchise, Mike Laidlaw, has started his own studio in Canada to "further cement the region's leading role in the global entertainment scene." Other notable game development names like Thomas Giroux, Jeff Skalski and Frédéric St-Laurent B, who have credits on The Crew, Assassin's Creed: Syndicate and Civilization amongst them, joined Laidlaw to form Yellow Brick Games in late 2020.

"Leveraging a smaller talented team where people come first, we will create amazing worlds and experiences for all others to enjoy," said Skalski, and Yellow Brick Games is currently working on an untitled project with a team of 15 developers.
