'Battlefield 6' Might Not Be Coming To Last-Gen Consoles

New game, new platforms, perhaps

Some fresh Battlefield 6 news just in from the rumour mill: EA's next military shooter might skip the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 entirely, to focus exclusively on the new-generation consoles of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.

This tiny tidbit of tantalising titillation comes via Reddit and known leaker of such things, Tom Henderson on Twitter. That's not his full name. I think. Anyway, Henderson posts that he's yet to hear a thing about the next Battlefield appearing on the outgoing consoles - which makes two of us, really. Though, none of us have heard anything concrete about 2021's Battlefield yet, anyway. It might not even be called Battlefield 6.

What we do know is that EA plans to release a new Battlefield game at the end of the year. Beyond that, it's all rumours. Rumours like how the new game is inspired by Battlefield 3; how it'll have free-to-play features and a battle pass; how it could be a day-one release on Xbox Game Pass. Henderson nods to that little nugget of potential in his tweet, and the EA Play service is part of Game Pass these days, so, maybe?

With its release coming at the end of 2021, EA's betting on the new-gen consoles only may pay dividends, assuming that stock levels improve to allow those who want a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X/S to actually get one (personally, I'm over getting one this year, and will happily wait for 2022). You'd think that there'd be an audience big enough, on the new consoles only, by the end of the year, for a new-gen-exclusive launch to make financial sense - especially when you add in PC sales. You'd think.

We expect to see something formal about Battlefield 6 - including its release platforms - during this year's all-digital E3, held between June 12 and 15. Meantime, why not check out everything we think we know about the game so far, here.
