Please, make it so.

Much like a fine whisky, Batman: The Animated series just gets better with age. The show first aired way back in 1992, and I adored watching the adventures of Batman and Robin as a wee lad.

But the older I've gotten, the more I've come to appreciate everything the show managed to achieve during its time on air. The best kid's shows don't talk down to their audience, and creators Bruce Timm, Paul Dini, and Alan Burnett didn't compromise: this was a Batman for all ages - one that was still kind and decent, but terrifying and hard when needed. He was just as home fighting the likes of Joker and Two Face as more outlandish creations like the Clock King and the Condiment King. I'm not sure why they were both kings, but there you are.

Quite aside from that, Batman: TAS managed to establish a look and tone for the character that would last for four seasons and spawn an extended universe of heroes that included Superman and the Justice League. It's been incredibly frustrating to watch DC struggle to get a shared movie universe off the ground after all these years when we saw Batman nail it on the small screen so long ago.

Then of course there are the performances. Some of you might now be more familiar with Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill as Batman and Joker in the Arkham video games... but TAS is where they started out, and they swiftly established themselves as the definitive Dark Knight and Clown Price Of Crime in the eyes of several generations.

Next year is the 30th anniversary of Batman: TAS, and a new rumour suggests that DC intends to mark the occasion by bringing the show back from the dead as a HBO Max streaming exclusive. As reported Batman-News, writer and director Kevin Smith recently claimed on his Fatman Beyond podcast that he'd heard from reliable sources that the show is coming back. Having written multiple Batman projects over the years, Smith is an absolute authority on the Bat, and would certainly know the people in the know on this kind of project... though no word on who from the original team will be returning.

With any luck we'd see the return of the creative team of Timm, Dini, and Burnett, as well as Conroy and Hamill. The only fly in the ointment is that Hamill has said a few times in the past that he's ready to say goodbye to Joker once and for all. With that said, almost every time he's said he's retiring the character... he turns around and comes back for one last hurrah. If any Joker project was to be Hamill's genuine last one, let's hop he decides to make a 30th anniversary series of Batman: TAS that swansong.
