Fallout 4 is getting a free PS5/Xbox Series update

Bethesda have confirmed a new-gen update is releasing for Fallout 4, which will add 4K resolution and improve the game's frame rate.

Earlier this month, the Fallout franchise celebrated its 25th birthday, and today, the celebrations came to a close with a very exciting announcement.

In a blog post on Bethesda’s Fallout site, it’s been confirmed that a new-gen update is coming soon for Fallout 4. That’s right - juicer frame rates and shiny new graphics options are on their way, and what’s more, the update is releasing at the low, low price of absolutely nothing.

Before we get into it, take a look at some gameplay footage for the huge fan-made Fallout 4 mod, Fallout London, below.

“Prepare for the future: A next-gen update is coming to Fallout 4! Coming in 2023, this free update will be available for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and Windows PC systems, including performance mode features for high frame rates, quality features for 4K resolution gameplay, bug fixes and even bonus Creation Club content,” the blog post reads.

Currently, we don’t know when exactly in 2023 the update will be released, but rest assured, it’s on its way. The post also wraps up with a heartfelt thanks to fans for all their support.

“As we begin closing out the anniversary festivities, we want to thank you - the fans - who’ve joined us on this journey these past 25 years,” the post reads. “Whether your first Fallout was in 1998 or you’re stepping into the wasteland for the very first time, we can’t wait to see you around for many years to come!”

In case you needed more Fallout-related stuff to get hyped for, the CEO of Obsidian (AKA the dev team behind Fallout: New Vegas) confirmed that the studio would absolutely make another Fallout game if given the chance. “There’s not even a question of whether or not we would do it, it’s just ‘will the opportunity arise?’” Feargus Urquhart said. We can only hope that this means a New Vegas sequel could happen some day (even though we know it’s definitely not happening at the moment).
