Thousands of fans are desperate for the return of the Def Jam series, signing a petition to implore EA to bring it back for a new release.

Remakes, remasters and revivals are everywhere in the gaming industry. In fact, if you take a look at the highest-rated games on Metacritic for this year, you’ll find that the majority of titles fall into one of those categories.

That’s not a bad thing by any means, and it’s gotten thousands and thousands of gamers excited at the concept of their favourite series or franchise taking on new life, provided there’s enough support to see it through. A great example is a petition signed by EA fans, to bring back a series that’s been long gone for several years, Def Jam.

For those who aren’t aware, Def Jam is a fighting game franchise that sees real-life hip-hop stars and other celebrity faces battle it out in wrestling matches, a bizarre concept, but one that became incredibly popular amongst fans, thus spawning several titles and sequels. The last game in the series was in 2007, so it’s long overdue for a continuation.

The petition demanding it was started by RAH Gaming, who said: “This is the OFFICIAL petition for the release of DEF JAM WORLD WAR on next-generation consoles! EA Games the world needs this.” So far, it’s amassed just shy of 12,000 signatures, with the current goal sitting at 15,000.

Weirdly enough, it’s not the only EA game fans are demanding a revival for, as recently sports fanatics called for the return of SSX, a snowboarding video game franchise that last saw a release in 2012. Fans of the series want to see it return, starting with a remake of one of its earliest titles, SSX Tricky.

While it’s unlikely EA will devote its time and resources to resurrect the Def Jam series, it’d definitely have a place amongst a modern audience, and there’s no doubt fans won't stop asking for it until their efforts are officially acknowledged.
