Dark Souls fans should give this new Steam game a try, as it’s directly inspired by FromSoftware’s masterpiece.
As someone who’s played Dark Souls too many times to be normal, I’d say I’m definitely obsessed with the series. The first game is what I’d consider to be a comfort game, ironic as there’s nothing really comforting about it.
The whole trilogy is a bleak, depressing reminder that nothing can last forever, and regularly tricks you into playing the villain of the story.
When you ignore all of that though it’s so much fun! To have your skills challenged by increasingly difficult areas and bosses has become a common video game genre, with so many studios and indie developers hoping their game will be the next Dark Souls.

One such game is Bone Souls, and from the title alone you can tell it’ll be taking some notes from FromSoftware.
You can find Bone Souls on Steam, and its description reads: “Bone Souls is an action RPG game set in a dark fantasy world. Enter a vast scene, challenge difficult and dangerous situations, and enjoy the sense of accomplishment when overcoming difficulties. The characters you meet on the journey and the stories that happen to the players are not to be missed.”
At the time of writing Bone Souls isn’t out yet, but it will be next month in October. For now, you can try out a free demo to see what it’s all about, and whether it’s right for you.
In this game you’ll play as a skeleton and fight other skeletons for skeleton superiority. I wish I was taking the mick but that’s pretty much the gist of it.

As the name implies you’ll do this with soulslike combat, acquiring souls from defeated enemies and gathering new weapons and gear to help you become stronger.
The demo will only take you so far into the game but you’ll apparently face three bosses, which sounds like a lot though I’m not sure how much you’ll be able to explore in-between your battles.
Bone Souls doesn’t look like the next Dark Souls, but in this case I don’t think it's necessarily trying to be. Judging it for what it is though the game looks decent, so be sure to give the demo a go and keep an eye out for its release date if you want to play the full thing.
