CD Projekt Says It Will Never Give Up On 'Cyberpunk 2077'

In its third quarter earnings call for this fiscal year, CD Projekt Red has doubled down on its dedication to Cyberpunk 2077 while forgetting to show us any sort of concrete timeline for the upcoming updates.

The company is pleased to report that this quarter saw almost £27 million in revenues which is a 40% rise on the same statistics from 2020. However, the consolidated net profit loss is the result of “expenses related to updating Cyberpunk and exploratory work on new projects which are at an early stage of development.” That comprises its newest acquisitions of developers Digital Scapes and The Molasses Flood, and this dynamic duo will be assisting with the future of “an existing CD Projekt IP.” In other words, they’re working on either more The Witcher or Cyberpunk.

In the investor question and answer session of the call, chief financial officer Piotr Nielubowicz explained that the team is committed to Cyberpunk 2077 though the road ahead may be long and filled with memes. “Obviously we’ll keep servicing the game for as long as necessary; however I strongly hope it will not take five years,” said Nielubowicz. “As I mentioned during my part of the presentation, this amount was already decreasing quarter by quarter during the current year. Right now we’re in a special moment, heading towards the release of the next-gen edition of [Cyberpunk 2077], so some of the servicing expenses are also dedicated to the next patch that will be out together with the next-gen edition.”

The next-gen edition of the game will be free to those who already own Cyberpunk 2077 on Xbox One or PlayStation 4. Really, the best way to play Cyberpunk 2077 is nab it while it’s on sale and hold your horses for the optimised version for the Xbox Series X, Series S or PlayStation 5 which comes out in the first quarter of 2022. Hindsight is 2020, no? 

Moreover, the share of work that’s been focused on improving the technical and visual experience of the game is going to shift towards the development of Cyberpunk 2077’s expansion. “We haven’t said anything about dates or the scope of expansions, so I don’t want to pre-announce what is going to be announced once we’re ready,” said president and joint CEO Adam Kiciński.
