If I had a penny for every article I wrote about The Binding of Isaac, I’d have a handful of pennies.

I can safely say that the indie darling is my favourite game of all-time, and over the years I’ve invested thousands of hours in the dank basement where Isaac dwells.

The Binding of Isaac is one of the most popular indie games of all time

So, colour me thrilled and surprised to hear that the original creator of The Binding of Isaac, Edmund McMillen has spoken on Isaac’s future.

Using his TikTok platform, McMillen answers questions from the Isaac community, and recently he discussed the possibility of a sequel.

“I can say with certainty that there will eventually be another Isaac game,” said the creator.

He went on to say that it will be a fair few years of waiting for the follow-up, stating that he plans to finish Mewgenics and any possible DLC for that game first.

McMillen did attempt to play down expectations saying, “The chances of an Isaac-like spin-off before a full sequel, a higher probability, probably.”

He is a prolific creator, with several acclaimed games under his belt, but The Binding of Isaac is perhaps his most beloved.

Not only does Isaac have millions of fans, but it revolutionised the roguelike genre and became a template for many.

McMillen claims that while he loves Isaac and is aware of the love shared by the community, he believes that Mewgenics is his best game.

Mewgenics is a cat-based tactics battler pulling from games like XCOM and McMillen’s love of Magic the Gathering.

The game is scheduled to release later this year, and once that’s done and dusted, perhaps the creator will return to Isaac.

Some, myself included, would argue that a sequel isn’t needed as the game has infinite replayability, however, McMillen is known for his unique ideas and if it can be done, he will ace it.
