An upcoming free-to-play title looks like a perfect mix between Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag and Valheim, and you can try it out for yourself as soon as possible (if you're lucky).

Considering how often people rave about Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, it’s a wonder that Ubisoft has never followed it up with some kind of sea-faring standalone title.

I’m sure something like that would sell incredibly wel– oh, sorry, I just remembered that Skull and Bones exists and it was a financial disaster, so they’ll probably never try that again.

Oh well, at least someone else is willing to take a crack at it.

Crosswind is an upcoming free-to-play survival MMO from developers and publishers Crosswind Crew that looks to be improving where Skull and Bones failed, and it seems that you’ll be able to get your hands on the title very soon.

Although Crosswind doesn’t have an exact release date, its playtests have officially begun. Now, you could just head on over to its Steam page, request access to the playtest and hope for the best… but there is another way you can increase your chances of playing this one early.

The Crosswind Crew team have revealed in a news post on Steam that there are "100 guaranteed playtest keys" available to those willing to update Crosswind’s page with some appropriate tags.

Considering that over 15,000 people have supposedly signed up for the playtest already, this might be your only way to make sure you gain access. Otherwise, it sounds like you’ll have to wait for the full release.

No word that I can find on whether or not this will be coming to consoles, so it sounds like Crosswind is a Steam exclusive title for the time being. If the playtests go well, I wouldn’t be surprised if that changes down the line though.
