PlayStation Plus October Free Games Are A Rough Deal For PlayStation 4 Users

"They’re throwing scraps at us right now"

As you might have already seen, the PlayStation Plus free games for October 2021 have leaked early... and it's not exactly a strong month for PlayStation 4 users.

Since the release of the PlayStation 5, Sony has slightly changed up its monthly lineup. Subscribers with a new-gen console will typically get one exclusive, while PlayStation 4-owning subscribers get the usually two, just as they have done for the last couple of years. PS5 users can also download the PS4 freebies too, of course.

In September, Overcooked! All You Can Eat was the free PlayStation 5 title, while Hitman 2 and Predator: Hunting Grounds were made available for the PlayStation 4. So far, I think it's fair to say Sony has maintained a pretty good balancing act, giving PS5 users good enough freebies to make having a new-gen console worth it - while also continuing to supply PS4 owners with games that don't leave them feeling as if they're being punished for not getting a PS5 yet.

This month, however, it looks as if that balance has shifted. While these leaks have yet to be officially confirmed, the source -Dealabs - has a solid track record on PS Plus predictions.

According to the leak, PlayStation 5 owners will be able to download the popular (and formerly PC-exclusive) World War II shooter Hell Let Loose. PS4 owners, meanwhile, are getting Mortal Kombat X and PGA Tour 2K21. Needless to say, PS Plus subscribers out there who don't have a PS5 aren't thrilled with these additions.

"Mortal Kombat X has been given away for free before," wrote on user. "I can't believe they couldn't make it MK 11 instead." It is certainly an odd move on Sony's part, and you have to wonder if maybe the Dealabs leak is slightly mistaken and it is, in fact, the most recent Mortal Kombat game being made available for free. If not, Sony will have some very unhappy subscribers on its hands.

"They're throwing scraps at us right now," added another user. " I do not own a PS5, can't it find anywhere... So this month includes MK10 that I already have, and PGA 2K21. Sony should really reconsider its lineup for the next months, even Epic store has a better one and they gift games every week for no money."

While it's undoubtedly a much worse deal for PS4 users, a number of PS5 subscribers have rightly pointed out that Mortal Kombat X is already in the PlayStation Plus Collection, rendering that freebie a touch pointless. Still, the majority of PS5 owners are at least excited about Hell Let Loose. So I guess at least there's that for them. It's just not a great month to be a PS4 owner.
