In a world populated by heavyweight titles like NBA 2K22 and FIFA 22, it's easy to feel like sports games have to be a certain way. Realistic visuals and big-name celebrities dominate the space, but it doesn't mean we don't have any other choice. One such alternative is Super Arcade Football, a joyous little thing that prioritises simple gameplay with a retro aesthetic.

Playing on Steam, Super Arcade Football can be controlled using WASD for directions and the space bar for passing, shooting and tackling. Like I said, the gameplay is basic, but it works well enough. Don't get me wrong, there are still times where you'll be controlling one player but inadvertently commit a tackle with another. However, this is a small gripe in an otherwise robust control scheme.

Gameplay isn't without variety. You can pick your starting XI for each match, and your formation, just like a real manager or head coach would. However, I'm not sure the former component makes any real difference, which isn't a bad thing. It just highlights how the gameplay of Super Arcade Football is about you, not what team you're using.
There are also weather and pitch varieties. You can play in snow or rain instead of the more ideal, clear weather settings. Pitches range from outdoor grass to indoor wooden floors, with that last one also removing the significance of the touchline so throw-ins, corners and goal kicks aren't available.
There is a story mode where you take charge of a football club in disarray, looking to take them back to their best. It's a straightforward narrative with a sprinkling of cutscenes but some unwelcome body shaming hinders enjoyment.
For multiplayer, there are local and online options. I wasn't able to test the local mode (I'm so lonely), but the online gameplay was solid and steady, with no noticeable lag issues getting in the way of the experience. It didn't take long to find opponents either, which is another big plus.

In short, Super Arcade Football is the video game equivalent of a catchy pop song. It may feel simple but the more you play it, the more you'll find within. It's simple in the best possible way, and while there's one issue with the story mode that is hard to look beyond, it's a very good game overall.
