Xbox Boss Wants To Focus On More RPGs Next-Gen

Xbox Boss Wants To Focus On More RPGs Next-Gen

So... give us Fable 4 now?

As the arrival of next-gen hardware draws closer, gamers are starting to wonder which kind of games we'll be seeing more (or less) of. Will the games-as-service model be adopted/shoehorned into more titles? Will Sony and Microsoft focus more on single-player narrative-driven experiences? Is multiplayer the future?

It's impossible to say right now. One thing we do know, at least, is that Xbox wants to focus on more RPGs when Scarlett launches next year. Speaking with Xbox On in a recent interview, Xbox Boss Phil Spencer revealed that the RPG genre is an area that the company wants to continue to push and expand going forward.

"One of the things that I'm really proud of that I see now is how RPGs are stepping up for us," Spencer said. "Back in the day, when I think [of] Mass Effect 1, which I worked on, Jade Empire, Fable, I remember we really staked out RPGs as something that was important."

A lot of these games are incredibly old at this point, and it's been a long while since we've seen an Xbox exclusive RPG. With that said, Spencer believes that the company has done great work in the genre and wants to build on Microsoft's existing legacy.

"Obviously first-person and third-person shooters have been strong," Spencer explained. "But it's nice with [The] Outer Worlds coming out, Wasteland [3]. I think RPG is an area that we [purposefully] focused on and wanted to do more."

Spencer and Xbox Game Studios have been on something of a studio acquisition spree in the last few years of course. Among its purchases are some real RPG powerhouses like Obsidian Entertainment and inXile Studios. According to various reports, it also sounds like Playground Games is currently working on the long-awaited Fable 4.

I have to say, some of Microsoft's current decisions seem to be slighty at odds with Spencer's statements about a renewed focus on RPGs. Obsidian, for example, is currently working on an early access survival game called Grounded. While it allegedly has some RPG elements, it's a definite change of pace for the developer.

There's also the fact that Playground Games are working on the next Fable. Playground Games are predominately known for their work on the Forza franchise. This isn't to say that the studio can't deliver an RPG, but it is arguably an odd choice of studio for an exclusive Xbox RPG.
