A new Star Wars sequel casting rumour has fans excited for the next film from Lucasfilm.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens was generally well-received amidst criticism that it played it fairly safe, while The Last Jedi was incredibly divisive (even if we know it's great).

Following that, The Rise of Skywalker ended up being incredibly unpopular with fans for its attempts to undo some of the bolder choices in The Last Jedi, while also trying to please everyone.

Either way, even with great shows like Andor and The Mandalorian under its belt, Disney’s era of Star Wars has been a bit of a mixed bag.

The next major Star Wars film from Lucasfilm will be Star Wars: Starfighter, which is due for release in 2027.

We already know Ryan Gosling has been cast to play the lead, with Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy directing.

It is now being reported that Mia Goth has been cast alongside Gosling as the film’s villain.

Disney had previously cast her in Marvel’s Blade, although there are reports that she may have been recast.

The report initially came from journalist Jeff Sneider, but it has now been confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter.

It’s confirmed that this was the role Mikey Madison was originally set to play before she dropped out.

Production is also expected to begin later this year, at which point we'll probably hear about further casting info.

“Guess Disney really wanted to hold onto her while Blade is in purgatory,” wrote a comment on the Star Wars Reddit page.

“Mia Goth as a SW villain,” wrote another. “Yeah sounds perfect.”

While it seems the casting has been quite a popular move by Disney, some fans were a bit more sceptical.

“My expectations are it'll be serviceable entertainment where Gosling and Goth give better performances than the script gives them any right to,” wrote one fan.

Star Wars: Starfighter is due to release in cinemas on 28th May, 2027.
