It has been years since the last entry in The Getaway franchise and the cancellation of the third game, but fans are still in love with the series, wanting a remake or a sequel.

The Getaway, a PlayStation 2 exclusive, was a Grand Theft Auto rival that provided a high level of grittiness that many players wanted. Inspired by British gangster films, it kept the action in London and took advantage of deals with automobile manufacturers which allowed for real world vehicles in the game.

GTA has dominated the crime genre for years

Fans on the PS5 subreddit have discussed a passion for the game saying "Sony really need to revive the franchise." and many have gathered to discuss their favourite memories of the game saying "The first Getaway blew my mind, and it was the first time I'd seen my country's captial in a game with so much detail."

One user, u/Sukhdev_92 said "It was such an awesome feeling driving around my home city, the gang culture and the story kept me hooked." and this was echoed by u/Sickteddy who praised the game saying "The Getaway was my first game on PS2 (it cames on PS2 Bundle) and damn i loved this game the first time i played it. I would love to see this franchise rise again."

The Getaway was due to have a third game coming from the London Studio and it even had a cinematic trailer dropped at E3 2006. Sadly, the game was cancelled as Sony wanted to reallocate the manpower to projects many would go on to call gimmicks, such as EyeToy and the SingStar series.

A remake of The Getaway would allow for a new gritty GTA-style game on a smaller scale than the Rockstar smash hit, plus it would please those who keep asking for a new crime game set in the UK.
