A Classic PlayStation Mascot Is Finally Returning On PS5

Notable industry insider Nick Baker has claimed that we'll be getting a new Sly Cooper game for PS5 announced later this year.

When you think of PlayStation mascots, who are the first characters that come to mind? Chances are, you’re almost certainly going to think of Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon - these two icons basically defined the late 90s-early 2000s PlayStation era (which is why it’s so weird to think that Xbox is due to own the pair when their Activision buyout goes through).

However, there’s another legend out there, who’s been seemingly forgotten by Sony for almost a decade now. As reported by ComicBook, everyone’s favourite thieving raccoon, Sly Cooper, is apparently set to make a comeback on PS5 this year.

The first three Sly Cooper titles were some of the PS2's very best games, but let's face it, the console was overflowing with incredible releases - check out our top 10 below.

Whispers of a fifth Sly Cooper game have been in the air for months now - in September last year, XboxEra co-founder Nick “Shpeshal Nick” Baker claimed to have heard from an “OG Sony source” that Sucker Punch Productions’ creation would see a revival on the PS5. Now, in the most recent episode of The XboxEra Podcast, Baker spoke further about the game, and when we might expect to see it officially announced.

“I’ve had a lot of people tagging me on Twitter about Sly Cooper, [asking] ‘do you know when Sly’s being announced?’. As far as I know, I wouldn’t expect a Sly Cooper announcement in June,” he said. “It should still be a 2022 announced thing, just as far as I’m being told, I wouldn’t expect it at this June rumoured event, it would probably be announced later if there was like a September one or something like that.”

That “June rumoured event” he referred to is a Sony event, by the way - presumably the next State of Play. Rumours aside, it’d make sense for us to see some game announcements happen then - although E3 is cancelled, there’s no doubt that publishers and devs will still want to get us hyped for their upcoming releases. We only have a week of May left, anyway, so we don’t have long to wait and see.
