It turns out there’s a location in Skyrim you’ve probably never found. At least, not unless you intentionally went looking for it.
Even 14 years after its original release, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is the game that continues to surprise us in unexpected ways.
Bethesda Game Studios filled the game with so many things to discover, including stuff that you probably would never find without a guide or pointer of some sort.

There’s one place in particular that players might not even know exists, especially if you’re the type of person to keep out of trouble.
That location is The Chill, an unmarked cave north of Winterhold that serves as a prison for anyone who commits a crime in that region.
The Chill isn’t too interesting to explore. It’s guarded by a few frost atronachs and has some ore deposits, but it’s otherwise quite unremarkable.
Considering there isn’t really a lot to do in Winterhold besides becoming a Thane and doing the College questline, you shouldn’t be too surprised if you’ve never been there.

In all my hours of playing Skyrim, I can’t say I’ve ever been arrested and sent there either.
Even if you see its rough location on the map menu screen, The Chill is found beyond the fog at the edge of the map. It’s not something you’d normally find.
You can download the Unofficial Skyrim Patch, which adds this back in as a location you can discover. So you’re a little more likely to find it this way.
But even so, it’s still something you’d really have to go out of your way to find without being arrested in Winterhold.

If you do ever find yourself sent to The Chill though, you’ll have all your gear intact. So it should be quite easy to break out using a few lockpicks and evade the frost trolls to make an escape.
