Ryan Reynolds Jokes About Being Next James Bond, Immediately Regrets It

The name's Pool. Deadpool.

With Daniel Craig's time as James Bond officially over as of September's long-awaited No Time To Die, speculation has turned to who exactly will be the next actor to take on the role of the iconic superspy.

At the time of writing, we still have no idea who it'll be - although an announcement is surely incoming. In lieu of any official news, a number of popular stars have thrown their hats into the ring. Henry Cavill and Dwayne Johnson have both expressed interest in becoming 007 in recent months, while others are still desperate to see Idris Elba take it on.

Becoming James Bond is a serious business, of course, and there's very little room for joking around. That's a lesson Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds learned the hard way when he made the mistake of jokingly submitting his application for the role.

"I hear they're looking for a new Bond," Reynolds said in a recent interview with The Times. "Could you accept a Canadian sipping gin and tonic instead of a martini? If so, I'm interested."

Naturally, the internet swiftly took Reynolds lighthearted words at face value and imploded. It seems the very idea of a snarky Canadian best known for his role as the fourth wall-breaking Deadpool playing a character as iconic as James Bond rubbed some people up the wrong way. Other, more normal people were able to remember that James Bond is a made up person and that it doesn't really matter who plays him.

The resulting storm of furious Bond purists and media coverage forced Reynolds to take to Twitter and point out the obvious: that he was just screwing around.

"I promise you I was not even remotely serious here," the actor tweeted in response to The Times' story.

Personally, I'd be kind of morbidly fascinated to see Ryan Reynolds take over the Bond franchise and literally just be Ryan Reynolds in every Bond movie he starred in for the next few years.
