Capcom has been on a roll in recent years releasing hit after hit, and perhaps none more so than its iconic survival horror series, Resident Evil.

For many, the pinnacle of the survival horror genre is associated with Capcom’s Resident Evil, though we’re sure that Konami’s Silent Hill franchise will have something to say on that matter. Well, at least with the OG Silent Hill trilogy.

Check out the Resident Evil 2 remake launch trailer below!

When the original Resident Evil was released for the PlayStation in 1996, it played a huge role in defining the survival horror genre. It had a compelling (if not wonderfully cheesy) story, interesting characters, grotesque monsters, resource management, and much more.

Then when its sequel arrived in 1998, it was arguably the perfect example of how a sequel should be done. It had taken everything that made its predecessor successful, but Resident Evil 2 was made bigger and better. Many fans of the Resident Evil series consider the OG RE2 as the best the franchise has to offer.

So when the Resident Evil 2 remake arrived in 2019, it not only offered veteran fans of the series an opportunity to arguably play a better version of the game they love but also welcomed news fans that may be unfamiliar with the franchise. What’s more, the remake was also well-received by critics and fans alike, garnering scores into the 90s on aggregate websites such as Metacritic.

Well, other than being a critical success, the Resident Evil 2 remake is a massive commercial success for Capcom too. Published on the Capcom Corporate Relations website, it’s been revealed that the Resident Evil 2 remake is now the best-selling game in the franchise with over 12.6 million unit sales across PC and consoles.

Resident Evil 2 remake now tops Resident Evil 7 Biohazard which currently has 12.4 million sales, followed by Resident Evil 5 and 6 with 8.8 million, then Resident Evil Village and Resident Evil 3 remake with 8.3 million and 7.6 million respectively, all earning spots in Capcom’s top 10 best-selling games.

At the time of writing, the Resident Evil 2 remake sits in third place, behind Monster Hunter Rise with 13.2 million and Monster Hunter: World with 19 million. It’s perhaps worth mentioning that neither the Resident Evil 4 remake nor Street Fighter 6 is currently in Capcom’s top 10 best-selling games, yet. However, we expect that to change in the near future.

The Resident Evil 2 remake is out now for PC, PlayStation and Xbox. There’s even a cloud version on the Nintendo Switch.
