Red Dead Redemption PS5 release immediately shoots to top of PlayStation Store charts

It seems not everyone was angry about the 'basic' Red Dead Redemption port.

Red Dead Redemption is one of the most popular games from Rockstar Games' back catalogue, and that’s saying something from the GTA developer.

When Red Dead Redemption was originally released for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 back in 2010, it quickly became one of the most critically acclaimed games of all time. RDR scores as high as 95 on Metacritic, cementing its legacy.

Recently, rumours were making the rounds that Red Dead Redemption was to benefit from a remake or at the very least, a remaster in the hope of introducing it to modern audiences, as well as offering a new and improved version of the game to veteran fans.

Sadly however, when Rockstar Games announced the new release of Red Dead Redemption, we learned that it would be neither a remake nor remaster, it is in fact a port for PS4 and Nintendo Switch. Albeit, in a 4K resolution on PlayStation and now playable on the go thanks to Nintendo’s hybrid console. It will also come bundled with the Undead Nightmare expansion.

What’s more, this port wasn't announced for Xbox, because RDR is already playable on the console thanks to backwards compatibility in 4K. Furthermore, unlike the recent PlayStation and Nintendo Switch ports, the backwards-compatible Xbox version still has multiplayer and as I found out the other day, it still has an active online community.

As you can imagine, this seemingly basic port didn't go down well with the video game fanbase, especially with its launch RRP of £40/$50. A price at which Take-Two Interactive CEO believes is ‘commercially accurate’.

So with that in mind, you’d think that this Red Dead Redemption re-release would struggle to sell, right? Well, it seems we might be wrong. In a tweet shared by Ben on Twitter, a reliable source of Rockstar Games information, Red Dead Redemption is currently sitting high as a trending game on the PlayStation Store.

At the time of writing, it’s currently at number one in the charts, and I’ve just confirmed that for myself by checking my PS5 console. Perhaps despite the apparent uproar, there seems to be more fans willing to splash the cash, rather than taking a stance by not purchasing the re-release.

To be fair, if you’ve never played RDR and do not have access to older PlayStation or modern Xbox consoles, I can see why many gamers would want to pick up this absolute classic. Red Dead Redemption is out now on PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch.
