Red Dead Redemption 3 prequel setting has fans unconvinced

Will we get RDR3?

Rockstar Games fans are unconvinced about a proposed Red Dead Redemption 3 being another prequel.

Some might say that the Red Dead Redemption series is better than Grand Theft Auto and to be honest, that would be a fair statement. After all, while the GTA series is Rockstar Games’ cash cow, that doesn't make Red Dead Redemption any less epic.

Check out the Red Dead Redemption trailer below!

Despite carrying the number two in the name, Red Dead Redemption 2 is a prequel to the original game starring John Marston which was released in 2010 on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

The original Red Dead Redemption is set in 1911, during the decline of the American frontier. Red Dead Redemption 2, which stars Arthur Morgan, a leading member of the Dutch van der Linde gang (who we met in RDR1) is set in 1899.

So where does that leave Red Dead Redemption 3? We assume it will be released at some point but what we don't know for sure is whether it will be a prequel or sequel.

In my opinion, if Red Dead Redemption 3 ends up being a sequel, it would lose much of its Wild West identity. I’d probably prefer a new story with a new cast, that might have some loose connections to previous games.

However, some Reddit users feel that a sequel is the way to go. “RDR3 being about a young Dutch/Hosea/Arthur would be worse than a 1920s-style RDR game,” said Redditor SnooEagles3963.

“At least a 1920s-style RDR game with Jack would be something new. It might not necessarily be a Western, but at least it would be a new story that we don't already know how it ends,” they continued in a long post.

“So you’d rather play an RDR game that’s not about the Wild West?” The-Reddit-Giraffe replied. “I disagree, I think a story in the height of the Wild West would be awesome, I don’t care if it’s about the Van der Linde gang or a completely different story. I just want a Wild West game and not a 1920s mafia game.”

“I hate the idea of a 1920s Jack-led game more than another Van der Linde prequel, so I disagree,” said hortys. “But I'd prefer a new central cast anyway.”

“I think it's time to move on from the Dutch gang,” suggested UnkleMonsta. “With Red Dead having such a wide variety of characters throughout the series, I wouldn't mind some new blood.”

Only time will tell whether we’ll get Red Dead Redemption 3 and what story it will tell. The only thing we know for sure is that it will arrive after GTA VI, currently scheduled to be released late this year.
