Xbox Players Mourn ’Under-Appreciated” Exclusive That’ll Never Get a Sequel

Another great lost to time

In an era of sequels, remakes, and remasters, it is hard to believe that that was not always the case as players lament one mid 2000s launch that never received a well-deserved continuation.

In recent years, if a triple-A game is released and sells well, we can safely assume that a sequel will be announced shortly after.

After all, players are going to immediately jump on the game’s bandwagon and be eager for more so it works out for all parties.

However, there are some games that do not receive the same treatment, despite being equally as loved.

That was definitely the case for 2014’s Sunset Overdrive.

Developed by Insomniac Games, Sunset Overdrive was an action-adventure game set in the dystopian Sunset City where our main character had to fight off humans who had turned into mutant creatures after consuming FizzCo’s energy drink line.

The game was praised for its visuals, traversal system, combat system and humorous writing but with Insomniac Games selling just 1.9 million units, Sunset Overdrive did not welcome any sequels or spin-offs.

Over recent years, Sunset Overdrive has become widely regarded as an “under-appreciated” title and it is no wonder that players have recently been mourning the fact that it will never receive a well-deserved sequel.

“Sunset Overdrive was under-appreciated and deserved a sequel,” user GeorgiaPossum shared over on r/xbox.

Another user agreed, adding, “Loved this game. Wish we got a sequel.”

According to user Sad-Willingness4605, Sunset Overdrive’s “failure” was in part due to the launch of the Xbox One.

“Everything released for Xbox One suffered greatly for how s*itty the Xbox One launch was,” they explained.

“It cascaded to all the launch year games. Sunset Overdrive was a true gem.”

For another, it was due to an under-performing PC port.

“PC port is kind of bad,” they shared.

“It was a fun game on release, it sucks that it will never get a sequel because of stupid publishing rights issues.”

Although Sony owns the IP, Microsoft still has publishing rights for any possible sequels or re-releases and so, much like some of our other favourite games, it remains at a stalemate.

But who knows? Maybe this will change in the future and Sunset Overdrive fans will get the sequel they have been craving for the past 11-years.
