Xbox Game Pass confirms free post-apocalyptic take on GTA 6 that looks hilarious

Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, Premium, and PC users can all enjoy the excellent game that is Quarantine Zone: The Last Check - and it’s about to get a GTA VI-esque upgrade.

Developed by Brigada Games and published by Devolver Digital, Quarantine Zone: The Last Check is a zombie simulation game with a difference.

Here, you’re not traipsing across the country akin to what you might get in The Last of Us.

Instead, you reside within the safety of a checkpoint of a collapsing city, tasked with screening survivors, managing resources, and keeping the dead at bay.

You’ll need to x-ray survivors, check for symptoms of the undead disease, and test reflexes before deciding whether to admit or incinerate.

It’s a blast to play - and the newly announced free Miami Zero DLC looks like the perfect excuse to return to Quarantine Zone or check it out for the first time.

Miami Zero is clearly capitalising on the GTA VI hype, launching one month before Rockstar Games’ behemoth title.

The Miami setting is an obvious nod to Vice City and the DLC’s neon-hued visuals share a kinship with GTA VI’s marketing art.

Miami Zero is actually a prequel campaign so it could work as your first taste of what Quarantine Zone: The Last Check has to offer.

Within the DLC, you’ll discover the origins of this universe’s zombie virus, experiencing ‘ground zero’ on outbreak day.

“Welcome to the original infection site: Miami, Florida. A place where sharing is caring - whether that be the sharing of good times… or *sniff* strong substances,” reads a synopsis.

“A growing slice of Miami’s party scene is also sharing something new: a yet-unseen, gene-altering virus. Classic. Discover the origins of Quarantine Zone’s infection at ground zero, and learn just how quickly the spring break vibes can go from rad to rancid.”

You’ll step into the shoes of a first responder, working the front lines as this deadly virus begins to spread.

As such, you won’t have quite as many tools and protocols as you do in the base game.

These are never-before-seen symptoms, so everything is a little bit more experimental and rudimentary here.

A quarantine zone has been erected at the site of a cancelled music festival which handily has a massive yacht docked nearby.

The idea is that incoming survivors will need to prove they’re worthy of a spot on the ship. Being worthy goes beyond being virus-free; you may want to get some manual labour out of them, for example.

You’ll meet a wide array of NPCs.

“Check their vitals, seize their contraband, hear their pleas… but don’t get distracted. What could be excused as a nervous sniffle brought on by a certain powder-based habit could also be something else entirely. Your call… send ‘em to the ship? Or the shark tank?” devs add.

Considering Miami Zero includes a new setting, new tools, new symptoms, a new research and development system, a new “ship repair metagame”, and new survivors, it’s hard to believe that it’s free … but it is.

Steam and Xbox owners of the base game will be able to dive into Miami Zero at no extra cost from October 15.

And, again, it’s featured on Xbox Game Pass if you want to enjoy both the base game and DLC for free, within the cost of your subscription.
