Steam freebie: one of 2022's biggest releases free to download and keep

It's about time, too.

Heads up - one of 2022’s biggest team-based shooter games is coming to Steam, where it’ll be free to download and keep.

You can hardly move for free games on Steam. Amongst all the full-price releases, the digital storefront is home to thousands of freebies which you can lose weeks, if not months of your time to if you so desire, and there’s no doubt that this upcoming release is one that could keep you absorbed forever.

Also free-to-play on Steam right now is Temtem Showdown - a Pokémon-like battle simulator. Take a look at the trailer below.

Drum roll, please - it’s Overwatch 2. Obviously, Overwatch 2 being free is nothing new - it’s been free-to-play since its launch last October. However, neither it or its predecessor (rest in peace, old friend) were ever available on Steam - up to this point, PC players have had to play OW2 via the Battle.net launcher, and who likes cluttering their desktop up with extra game launchers if they can help it?

Perhaps most excitingly though, Blizzard Entertainment has confirmed that Overwatch 2 is just the first of a number of its games coming to Steam - the studio stated in a blog post that “we’ll be sharing more about potential other games coming to the platform when the time is right”. Diablo IV, anyone? Mind you, a whole load of players recently uninstalled that over its controversial new update, so Blizzard might be waiting to roll out a new patch or two before considering launching it on Steam.

“It’s our goal at Blizzard to listen to players and try to exceed their expectations in everything we do,” Blizzard Entertainment president Mike Ybarra wrote in the aforementioned blog post. “While Battle.net remains a priority for us now and into the future, we’ve heard players want the choice of Steam for a selection of our games, starting with Overwatch 2 on 10 August. We’re happy to work with Valve to make that happen.”

Also on 10 August, Overwatch 2’s first three story missions will be released as part of Overwatch 2: Invasion - don't miss out.
