A surprise download on Steam has quickly become one of the top gaming experiences on the site.

Getting to the top of the charts isn’t a simple feat.

Even if a game achieves such heights, it’s not easy to maintain the prominent position for long. Arguably, this is what makes this surprise free download so impressive.

Since it showed up on Steam, it’s had quite a strong lead on other demos; currently, it’s player count sits at 3,511.

You need to watch the Metaphor: ReFantazio trailer before you go

According to SteamDB, at its peak the game hit over 12,000 players.

Those are some impressive numbers.

The title dominating the charts right now is Metaphor: ReFantazio - Prologue Demo. Developed by Atlus and published by Sega, this Persona-looking experience is naturally piquing gamers’ curiosity.

Will it be too similar to Persona? Can it match that same kind of energy?

At the moment, the demo reviews give it a solid 7/10, with the majority of feedback positive in nature.

“Game is quite good, from the looks of this demo,” posted Pajama Day, “You can think of it as a mashup of the story and ‘day life’ mechanics of the Persona series with the combat and ‘night life’ mechanics of Shin Megami Tensei.”

Another demo review reads, “It's so refreshing seeing one of the greatest JRPG devs of all time doing something unique.

“The SMT series, especially Persona, is wonderful. However, a change in Atlus's focus has been long overdue for quite some time, and Metaphor is the breath of fresh air fans have been demanding.”

It’s only a matter of days before the complete game launches.

You can choose to wait until 11 October and go into your playthrough with a clean slate, or you can tentatively see what the demo has to offer.

It’s free, so why not, right?

Download the surprise freebie to begin a new JRPG adventure that’s as wacky, wonderful, and action-packed as Persona.
