Red Dead Redemption movie gets disappointing update

Dreams of a Red Dead Redemption film have been shot down, we're trying not to cry

After years of saying they couldn’t be successful, video game films are making a comeback, but Rockstar’s IPs unfortunately won’t be adapted.

Video game film adaptations have done the impossible recently and actually turned out well. Icons like Sonic The Hedgehog and Super Mario have made their way onto the big screen, soon to be joined by The Legend Of Zelda.

The small screen has also benefitted from them as well, with HBO’s The Last Of Us TV series becoming one of the most popular shows on the streaming platform.

All the buzz around these adaptations has led to fans theorising what video game franchise could be tackled next, with one of the biggest choices being the legendary Red Dead Redemption series.

Fans have even made concepts for what Rockstar’s Western IP could look like on the big or small screen, and there was even talk of a Red Dead Redemption film entering production in the years to come.

Unfortunately, following the recent news that Grand Theft Auto VI will get its first trailer in December, it’s also been confirmed by Rockstar’s parent company Take-Two that the rumoured GTA and Red Dead Redemption movies are not happening.

Take-Two’s CEO Strauss Zelnick has stated the company is taking a “very selective approach to licensing” for films, and while it has plans for Borderlands and BioShock live-action projects, it believes a Red Dead Redemption film would be too risky of a venture.

Zelnick said it’d be reluctant to risk “someone else’s execution in another area of the entertainment business,” which basically means they don’t trust anyone to do the series justice in live-action.

That being said, the series’ popularity continues to grow, with Red Dead Redemption 3 basically confirmed for after Grand Theft Auto VI releases.

Eventually there may come a time when a live-action film or TV series is simply a no-brainer, and too lucrative of an opportunity for Rockstar and Take-Two to let pass by.
