Red Dead Redemption 2 writer leaves Rockstar after 16 years

All good things must come to an end; whatever will Rockstar Games do now?

Some leave their jobs loudly, and others post an updated bio on LinkedIn – that’s exactly what a veteran Red Dead Redemption 2 writer has done.

Michael Unsworth, the vice president of writing, has left Rockstar Games after 16 years. Unsworth might not be a name you know by heart, but their work has been seen and felt across RDR and Grand Theft Auto. Even if you’re not a fan of those franchises, Unsworth was involved with May Payne 3 and L.A. Noire (oh, how I loved that game).

You win some, you lose some – like with these epic wins and fails!

The RDR2 seasoned writer’s updated profile now reads: “Mike is an accomplished writer who spent over 16 years working for Rockstar Games as a creative lead on some of the most critically acclaimed and commercially successful video game franchises of all time, most notably Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption.” Interesting use of third-person, but to each their own.

Reasons behind Unsworth departure remain unknown, mainly because neither they nor Rockstar have offered to comment on the matter. I suppose they believe a simple profile update is more than sufficient enough – do they not know gamers at all? We need all the details, especially if it concerns upcoming titles like GTA6. It could be that we see Unsworth’s name again, despite him having left for gaming pastures new.

Although change is afoot at Rockstar, that doesn’t mean we have to give up our love of RDR2; as if any of us would! Even more so now we’ve discovered an incredibly “awesome” feature that makes making gold a lot easier, not ignoring the fact that this money-making operation is strangely wholesome too. If that doesn’t tempt you back into the game (assuming you ever left), you could look forward to GTA6 and its dynamic weather system; lightning never looked so good, and fans are ridiculously excited about it. Though, to be fair, they’ve been waiting a looooooooong time for the game.

Unsworth leaving is sad news, however, we’re certain that Rockstar Games will soldier on somehow. And who knows, maybe we’ll see Unsworth at another developer in the not too distant future.
