Shadow Of The Colossus has the best boss fights in gaming, fans agree

The PlayStation 2 was packed with some fantastic exclusives and among those exclusives was Shadow of the Colossus.
Released in 2005 (or 2006 depending on your region), developed by Team Ico and Japan Studio, Shadow of the Colossus was an instant classic for PS2 gamers. Offering as a spiritual successor to 2001’s Ico, this legendary action adventure tells the heart-warming (and breaking) tale of a young man known as ‘Wander’ who is desperate to resurrect a girl named Mono.

In order to have his wish granted, Wander must embark on a quest to track and kill mythical colossi across a forbidden land traversing on horseback, which at the time, was somewhat reminiscent of Epona from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
Shadow of the Colossus required you to take down 16 colossi, each arguably more memorable than the last and fans on Reddit have been discussing their favourite boss fights on the forum. Though it has to be said, that the thread featured many more fantastic boss fights outside Shadow of the Colossus.
“What’s the best boss fight you fought in a game?” asked Redditor God954, while sharing an image of Peter Parker about to indulge in fisticuffs with Dr. Octavius.
“Not just this one boss - but really the whole game - Shadow of the Colossus. I do remember having a lot of fun with this boss though,” replied Modern_chemistry. “Realising how to defeat this colossus and the sandworm were both immensely satisfying. What a wonderful game,” rejoiced PK_Thundah. “The rush of wind and pure exhilaration when you first grab onto the wing... gives me goosebumps just thinking about it,” said studentwhoworries.
“When you realise that is the way to beat the boss… ugh. I’ll just never forget playing this game for the first time… hopping on your horse, finding the first colossus, figuring out how it all works,” added Modern_chemistry. “It was truly a life-changing video game - and the first game that made me truly appreciate video games as art.”
Other notable mentions include Snake vs Ocelot from Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriot and I won’t lie, that battle brought more than a tear to my eye. As well as Mr Freeze from Batman: Arkham City, Slave Knight Gael and Nameless King from Dark Souls 3, and the Rat King from The Last of Us Part II were another few mentions discussed in the thread.
If you’ve never played Shadow of the Colossus, we can most certainly recommend it. What’s more, a 2018 remake from Bluepoint Games is also available now on PlayStation 4 and is even included in PS Plus Extra and Premium.
