You’d be wrong in assuming that there are only five variations of the PlayStation 5.
It’s perhaps the PS5, PS5 Digital, PS5 Slim, PS5 Slim Digital, and PS5 Pro that are springing to mind and certainly, these are the main ‘types’ of PlayStation 5 console.
Within each product line, there are still differing variations though; Sony is constantly tweaking its formula.
I recall several years ago, in fact, Sony quietly released a revision of the base PS5 models which were several hundred grams lighter.

The company didn’t necessarily advertise this. It was picked up by eagle-eyed enthusiasts as the variations / revisions boast different product codes.
Well, history is repeating itself as a new revision of PS5 Slim is about to be unveiled.
This is according to reliable leaker billbil-kun so while I have to urge you to take this information with a pinch of salt, billbil-kun has an exceptional track record.
According to the leaker’s report, these revisions are known as ‘chassis’, with the original base PS5 so far having received three different chassis variants.

The fourth chassis, Chassis D, then arrived in November 2023, taking the form of the PS5 Slim.
This boasted the model number CFI-2000 but a new model number, CFI-2100, surfaced in certification documents dated to June 2025 suggesting that the fifth PS5 chassis is set to imminently arrive.
As stated in billbil-kun’s report, there are no major external design revisions this time around, but there is one key internal alteration which is perhaps intended to optimise production costs and reduce the need for consumer price rises.
It seems that the upcoming PS5 Slim Digital CFI-2100 will actually see its SSD storage reduced.

Documents appear to confirm that the console will go from having 1TB to just 825GB with this reportedly set to be identified by the reference model number CFI-2116.
This applies to the digital version only.
By all accounts the PS5 Slim with a disc drive will seemingly retain 1TB of SSD.
Furthermore, this change has so far only been spotted on the European versions of the console, but that’s not to say that it won’t roll out in other territories.

It’s pretty cheeky from Sony, especially considering the console has already risen in price by €100 post-launch.
The new chassis will need to advertise these internal changes but it’ll likely do so quietly, with billbil-kun explaining that it should say 825GB somewhere on the box, with that aforementioned model number.
It’s most certainly something that consumers will have to seek out though and may be harder to spot with online orders.
This revision will begin to roll out from 13 September so if you want the heftier Chassis D model with a guaranteed 1TB, I’d act sooner rather than later.
