Perhaps as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent stock shortages, it is hard to believe that the PlayStation 5 is soon celebrating its five-year anniversary.
Due to the aforementioned issues, it is not uncommon for a large quantity of PlayStation 5 owners to have only had their consoles for a few years which makes it all the more shocking to learn that the PlayStation 6 may be on the way soon.
Check out the PlayStation 5 Pro console in the trailer below!
First released back in 2020, the PlayStation 5 had a rough start but seemingly did not slow Sony down as it later released the PlayStation 5 Pro back in November 2024.

Despite a mid-generation refresh, leaker and insider Kepler_L2 shocked the internet earlier this year by revealing that “the design is complete” for the PlayStation 6 and that the console is “in pre-si validation already, with A0 tapeout scheduled for late this year".
This may be a lot of technical jargon but an important detail to note surrounds the A0 tapeout as the leaker reveals that the gap between this feature and the release of the console is usually around two years by Sony’s standards.
If this is true, we could see the PlayStation 6 be released at the end of 2027 and although this would make it the same length as the PS4 generation, some users are claiming that “this generation was a wash”.
“This generation has really been a total wash hardware wise, and frankly I don't see it ending with the next generation,” user timelordoftheimpala shared over on r/TwoBestFriendsPlay.

“Watch as they figure out all the cool s**t you can do with a PS5 or Xbox Series the moment next-gen comes by, and because of the install bases of both plus the Switch 2, it ends up prolonging the life of this generation too.”
A fellow user agreed, adding, “Way too early in my opinion. This gen feels like it needs another two years on top of that due to Covid at least.”
Of course, it is worth taking this leak with a pinch of salt as a time scale for the PS6 has not yet been confirmed by Sony.
However, it seems as though users are happy to stick with their PS5s for the time being.
