It’s happening, we’re all about to become zombie-like creatures controlled by a fungus just like in The Last of Us.

A 2008 episode of the nature documentary Planet Earth featured a horrifying fungus that turned creatures such as ants into mindless zombies, inspiring the Naughty Dog series, The Last of Us. Seriously, if you’ve never watched this episode, you should; it’s really creepy.

Check out The Last of Us Part I trailer below!

Thankfully, this fungus can't control humans due to our immune system and naturally higher internal temperatures, so we have nothing to worry about, at least right now. Regardless, it doesn't make the scenario any less terrifying which is one of the reasons the concept of The Last of Us on PlayStation as well as the HBO TV series has proven so successful.

The famous Planet Earth episode was filmed in a South American rainforest but now a version of the fungus has made its way over to Scotland in the United Kingdom. Yep, that’s right, we’re all doomed!

As reported by IGN (via The Times), the Gibellula fungus, much like the fungus featured in the Planet Earth episode, takes over its host with spores that grow inside the body. Fans of The Last of Us will also know that spores are what can infect humans.

The bright side of this wonderful fungus is that it also cannot infect humans. So what can it infect, I hear you ask? It infects spiders, bloody, spiders!

Now I have an image of zombie spiders in my head, could anything really be worse than this and why did it have to be spiders? Honestly, I can’t think of anything else more horrifying than that.

So now that lovely thought is in your head, go and enjoy playing The Last of Us Part I and The Last of Us Part II on PC and PlayStation. We can also look forward to HBO’s season two of its live-action adaptation set to premiere in 2025.
