PlayStation Plus users across message boards have summed up the idea of a ‘free’ upgrade to the Premium tier of the service as feeling a bit pointless.
Every once in a while, Sony will bestow a free, trial upgrade on PlayStation Plus Essential users, giving them a taste of the higher tiers available.
With different perks to each tier, it seems like a tempting deal, to get access as a free bump, but not everyone believes that Premium offers good value.
Over on Reddit, many fans of the service pick apart what truly makes the increased price worthwhile, and often find it lacking, preferring to stick to the middle tier, PlayStation Plus Extra.

After one user asked if the ‘free’ upgrade was worth it, they were met with a long list of reasons to opt for the middle tier instead.
“I tend to think Extra is the sweet spot,” noted Willeth in their comment.
This seems to be the most popular option, with many saying that Premium doesn’t offer enough exclusive content to PlayStation users to be worth the price difference.
One Redditor explains, “Premium only gives you access to streaming all your games. Demos for a couple of titles as well as access to PS3, PS2 and PS1 games.”

To which another replies that they don’t believe any of the tiers are worth the money any longer, noting they are, “Tempted to cancel and just put that cash towards games I would wanna play.”
Everyone’s mileage will vary; if you want retro stuff, then Premium will work out well for you, but Extra offers hundreds of games to download and play, and that should keep most users busy.
User Ddom1203 sums it up by saying, “probably not worth it unless you are gonna play a lot of Classic games.”
