Dying Light 2 free download announced, includes entirely new adventure

Fair warning, the "free" part of the "free download" will only apply to certain lucky players

Dying Light 2 has a free download on the horizon for owners of a certain special edition of the game.

Developer and publisher Techland announced the news at Gamescom and on their official website last night, but given the news it might not be fair to refer to the upcoming title as a “Dying Light 2” game anymore.

Dying Light: The Beast was originally supposed to be a DLC expansion for Dying Light 2, but developers Techland recently announced that the scope of the project has grown so much that it will instead be available as a standalone game.

As owner of Dying Light 2’s “Stay Human” Ultimate Edition were promised a “Story DLC 2” when they originally purchased the bundle, Techland has announced that owners of the Ultimate Edition will now receive Dying Light: The Beast free of charge instead.

As the original “Story DLC 2” eventually ballooned into Dying Light: The Beast, the developers are offering them the standalone title for free as a replacement - which is a pretty good deal considering that Dying Light: The Beast is going to be a “18-20 hour” affair.

If you don’t own Dying Light 2’s Stay Human Ultimate Edition, you can still pre-purchase Dying Light: The Beast on Steam if you’re that desperate to get ahold of it the second it drops.

Dying Light: The Beast directly follows on from the events of Dying Light and its expansion The Following, as players will once again take control of the first games protagonist Kyle Crane.

Fair warning, I’m about to spoil the events of both Dying Light and The Following so stop reading here if you still plan to play them.

Given that Kyle is now confirmed to be returning, this does mean that one of the two endings in The Following is most definitely non-canon (as it saw him die in a nuclear explosion) and that the other ending (in which he morphed into a volatile) is in fact canon.

No prizes for guessing who “The Beast” in the title of the new game is referring to…
