Cloud Imperium Games' fundraising efforts for ambitious space-sim Star Citizen has hit another milestone, topping an eye-watering $300 million in crowdfunding - that's around £240 million.

According to the crowdfunding timeline graph on the official website, the milestone comes as the developer looks back over a highly successful month, seeing the average donations jump from around $4 million (£3.1m) in April 2020 to $15 million (£11.9 million) in May 2020.

The studio also proudly displays that the game now exceeds 2.7 million users, too, and while it's possible that some of those may have only signed up to participate in free-to-play trials, that's still a sizeable player base contributing to the game's financial success.

"As a crowd funded project, Star Citizen's scope is based directly on the support provided by our backers. Money pledged goes directly to the game's development," the website says. Even the game's most ambitious stretch goal of $65 million - which offered "Enhanced Ship Modularity" to help players have the ship of their dreams and customise to suit their needs - was exceeded several years back.

The boost in funding might also be attributable to the prices of the games premium ships, which, in the case of the Drake Complete Pack 2950, can cost up to $4,600/£3.7K. As spotted by AltChar, between 26 May and 1 June, 2020, Star Citizen backers pledged around $8 million, which averages out to over $1 million a day - a day! This coincides with the availability of the $4.6K Drake Complete Pack 2950, intimating, perhaps, that a number of players did stump up for the 14-ship pack.
