No New Generation Consoles Were The Most Played Platform This Year, Says Study

No New Generation Consoles Were The Most Played Platform This Year, Says Study

The top 10 is full of surprises, but none more so than the platform beating out the Xbox Series X/S.

We’ve all been enjoying the various ‘Wrapped’ stats from across different websites, right? They have to be one of my favourite additions to modern life on the internet - what better way to make constant data-collection a fun and sharable trend? I also applaud anyone brave enough to openly share their music taste with the world, by the way.

Anyway, over on HowLongToBeat’s Twitter page, the site has been sharing a whole bunch of 2021 in review gaming stats, compiled from data submitted by users. Keep in mind that the site (currently) has 344.9K total users, so although it’s a pretty wide data pool, it’s certainly not representative of every gamer in the world. But hey, it’s fun, so let’s talk about it.

While you're here, be sure to check out this compilation of some of our favourite livestream wins and fails!

Over on the top 10 most completed games of the year, we had Resident Evil Village sitting pretty at number one, followed by Metroid Dread in second, and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart in third. People just couldn’t get enough of Lady Dimitrescu, huh? Also, this might just be me, but I can’t believe that game only just came out in May?! It’s been a long year, friends.

As for the most backlogged games, we have NieR Replicant ver. 1.22474487139… in the top spot, which, if typing out its full name is anything to go by, is frankly unsurprising. Here I thought that the names of some Kingdom Hearts games got a bit complicated. But really, it’s by all accounts a great game - at least people have been giving it a go, if nothing else. In second, we yet again see Resident Evil Village, which might seem slightly contradictory, but it goes to show just how many people have played it, even if it wasn’t everyone’s favourite.

Perhaps most interestingly though, we have the top 10 most played platforms of the year. Quite predictably, we have PC in the number one spot, but moving past that, we have a surprise contender of the PlayStation 3 in sixth, beating out the Xbox Series X and S, which follows shamefully in seventh. What are you people still doing over there?! Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great console, but still. Maybe that’s more indicative of the Xbox stock issues rather than anything else.

There’s even more stats to check out over on Twitter, so be sure to check it out if you’re interested. That is, if you’re not too busy playing on your PS3 in the year 2021. Again, what?!
