While Xbox has Forza and PlayStation has Gran Turismo, a racing franchise that has fallen from favour slightly is Need For Speed. It's a shame because back in the day, it was a spectacular series and one that deserves more love.

Fans of the series obviously agree, as some have rolled up their sleeves and gone to work remaking some of the classics using the latest and greatest Unreal Engine 5. The one we’re covering today is Need For Speed Underground 2, which looks far too good to be a fan project and makes us sad it’s not an official release.

You can cast your own eyes over the concept yourself via TeaserPlay, which has posted the full video on YouTube. It’s just over two minutes long and looks phenomenal.

It’s worth noting only the graphics have been touched up in the concept, it still has the same gameplay and physics which would likely need an upgrade for a modern release, but it looks exactly how you’d expect it to if it launched on current-gen platforms.

Fans were certainly impressed, showing as much in the comments along with hope the series returns to its former glory one day. One fan said: “This is how my brain remembered it looking in 2004. Great job.” Another added, “This is literally what every NFS fan needs!! NFS Underground 2 remastered FTW.”

One viewer concluded: “This game was my childhood and you just made my day with this video.” With games like Forza Motorsport in the field, it’s unlikely Need For Speed has what it takes to match or exceed the competition, but it’d be well-worth a try as there’s clearly a fanbase for it.
