Mortal Kombat, the video game so gory that it ended up changing law, celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, but sadly we’ve not got good news.

While there has been rumours and speculation about Mortal Kombat 12 currently being in the works, nothing official has been brought to light. NetherRealm Studios has taken the reins on the fighting series since the ninth instalment, a reboot called simply Mortal Kombat, and have kept a fairly regular schedule ever since. Since 2011 the studio has released a Mortal Kombat or Injustice game every two years.

We sat down with the actors of the 2021 Mortal Kombat film and had them guess the fatalities. Check it out in the video below.

However, 2021 came and went without a release from either of these fighting giants, and without even a whiff of news about what’s next. However, following the last release of Mortal Kombat 11, there were a number of complaints made by employees about the company - including accusations of poor working conditions brought on by the intense release schedule.

The company has since promised to reduce “crunch time” which could be the reason for the slow down in releases. While fans are glad to see that developers are getting a healthier work/life balance, it hasn’t stopped fans from asking about what the company has in the pipes.

When the studio’s creative director Ed Boon tweeted out in celebration of the 30th anniversary with some funny behind-the-scenes footage of the martial artists. Fans were asking the Mortal Kombat veteran about the series. This is where one player decided to shoot his shot.

Asking “Hey speaking of the 30th anniversary, are we expecting something big soon or no?” to which Boon responded with a simple “Soon? No.” Well at least this means the devs are being treated better we hope.
