iPhones switching to USB-C will actually improve charging speeds

iPhone's need for speed(-y charging) just got faster!

Does your iPhone just take too long to charge? We’ve all been there: sat on a commute, desperate to get some more apple juice (damn, I’m clever), and it just isn’t powering up as quickly as I want or need it to.

It’s the kind of horror story only millennials and younger generations understand. Which is why the news that USB-C charging might improve charging speeds for the next iPhone makes life worth living again.

Let's hope we don't end up in Simulacra with the new iPhone 15!

Incredible wordplay and puns aside, the potential for iPhone 15 to get a charging boost up to 35W, instead of the current 27W for the iPhone 14 Pro, is pretty big tech news. Arguably, it’s Apple’s decision to remove lightning that has facilitated this possibly for improvement. Ming-Chi Kuo, an Apple analyst, predicted this in 2022. In a Twitter thread, the analyst went into detail, saying USB-C “could improve iPhone’s transfer and charging speed in hardware designs, but the final spec details still depend on iOS support”.

As with every positive, there’s a negative to balance it out, the main one being the likelihood that only Apple certified charging cables will deliver such amped up speeds. Furthermore, users not already used to dealing with USB-C charging will have to make the transition, and as someone who has already suffered that change, I can tell you it’s tedious. When I purchased my MacBook and noticed it didn’t have a standard USB or lightning port, I almost lost my mind – I then had to pay for a USB to USB-C adapter to make all my little tech extras, like a desk fan, work.

No, you probably won’t be plugging a desk fan into your iPhone 15, but I wager you have other extras you’d like to use without adapters, and basically having pockets filled with only Apple certified kit. Annnnnnnd breathe.

The official reveal for the iPhone 15 is scheduled for 12 September. If you’re not all lost to the Starfield universe by then, you can expect to not only learn of new features, but also a heftier price tag. I shudder to think how much this new model will set people back…

The Apple announcement is due to take place on 12 September. However, that date could change, so keep your eyes peeled for updates.
