GTA Online fans are set to have their hearts broken with what could be the last final major update of its kind later this year.

When Grand Theft Auto V was first released in 2013 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, it was instantly on track to be one of the most successful video games of all time, which is why Rockstar Games has ported it onto every console generation since.

However, when the first iteration of GTA Online also arrived in 2013, Rockstar Games had a major cash cow on its hands with fans eager to acquire all the in-game microtransactions making the publisher obscene amounts of money.

The money that GTA Online continues to bring in is a huge reason why Rockstar Games has supported it with a constant flurry of major updates, unlike its Red Dead Online counterpart. One of the most fun GTA Online updates that fans appreciate is during Christmas time.

The typical sunny vistas of Los Santos replaced with snow blizzards are always a joy, especially when players replace gunfights with light-hearted snowball fights. Yet, it might be time for players to prepare to throw their last snowball in GTA Online this Christmas.

“This year will be the last Christmas in GTA Online,” suggested billsyliamgta with the next instalment of the Grand Theft Auto series set to be released late next year.

"I'm not ready to say goodbye to the game yet," replied Boubaker_gtt and babyyygrim screamed "NOOOO".

That being said, even if GTA VI is released next year (and isn't delayed), I think it would be too premature for Rockstar Games to end GTA Online content support anytime soon. Even in late 2025, I’m sure there will be plenty of gamers still playing the current version of the multiplayer game, even alongside GTA VI.

However, it wouldn't surprise me if the current iteration of GTA Online gets its final Christmas update next year. Only time will tell.

Grand Theft Auto VI does not have a set release date at this time but it is currently scheduled to be released next year for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. A PC release date is yet to be announced.
