There are many reasons why Grand Theft Auto VI has become one of the most anticipated games of all time and the wait from its previous instalment is definitely a big factor.

That is because, by the time Grand Theft Auto VI is released on 26 May 2026, it would have been almost 15-years since Rockstar released the latest entry in the franchise.

It is safe to say that it has been a long wait but with Rockstar at the helm, we can expect it to be worth it.

However, a recent report reveals that we may not have to wait another 15-years for Grand Theft Auto 7.

According to Obbe Vermeij, a former Rockstar producer, not only will GTA 7 take a lot less time to make but it will also be a whole lot cheaper and that is all to do with the rise of artificial intelligence.

“GTA 7 will be cheaper to produce than GTA 6”, he revealed.

“I imagine that, say, you do a cutscene, you could simply… all the characters in cutscene could be rendered by an AI, including the conversation, if you just describe the scene. This could be your first version of a cutscene. part of the work will probably be replaced. ”

As you can imagine, talk soon turned to how prevalent AI is becoming in the gaming industry and will continue to do so.

However, for Vermeij, this is just a natural progression.

“This has basically been happening to programmers over the years. When we started GTA 3, an Engine was just the rendering part, but the programmers still wrote physics, the detection of collisions and, you know, the code of animation – and all that has been removed from individual projects and now part of Engine, right? They used to do it and it is no longer necessary.

“When I started, programmers represented about a third of a typical team, and now it’s perhaps 10, 15 percent.

So that has happened to programmers. And now, with AI, even more work will be automated.”

It’s a sad truth but one which will unfortunately have to come true in order to get games like GTA 7 out there even quicker.

In the meantime, Grand Theft Auto VI is expected to be released on 26 May 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
