It may have been almost 15-years since Rockstar released Grand Theft Auto V for the first time but its online component, GTA Online, is still thriving to this day.
Designed to host 32-players in one lobby at one time, Grand Theft Auto Online offers fans of the franchise a chance to live out their criminal dreams by taking to the city of Los Santos with free rein.
With Rockstar regularly adding various events, cosmetics and incentives, GTA Online is still thriving to this day but with the arrival of Grand Theft Auto VI in May 2026, players can expect a whole new multiplayer experience.
So far, Rockstar has remained tight-lipped about what GTA VI’s Online world will entail but according to a recent insider, we can expect a much bigger experience.

According to user Fravilys in a recent Medium post, GTA Online 2.0 is currently working on a 64-player experience with the goal to reach 96 players in the future.
As you can see, this is a huge increase from the 32-player lobbies of the current GTA Online.
"According to an inside source, the upcoming multiplayer game, codenamed 'GTA6MP', is currently at an advanced stage, much more so than it was during the original GTA Online, which was developed between 2008 and 2013,” Fravilys reveals.
"One of the most significant advances would be the ability to perform free-roam multiplayer activities with players from different sessions, without ever having to leave your own environment or experience loading times.

"The next version of GTA Online is said to be aiming for a seamless and immersive gaming experience, with the ambition of reaching up to 96 simultaneous players per session. However, according to my latest information, this figure is currently limited to 64 players."
With GTA VI’s map expected to be Rockstar’s biggest so far, it would make sense for the studio to focus on bigger player numbers to make the world feel a lot more alive.
However, with this unconfirmed by Rockstar, it is worth taking with a pinch of salt.
