GTA 6 Be Damned, Grand Theft Auto's Own Undead Nightmare Is Finally Here

GTA VI is getting its own version of Undead Nightmare, the beloved expansion from Red Dead Redemption.

Originally released in 2010, Red Dead Redemption is considered by many to be one of the best video games of all time, as reflected by its score of 95 on the aggregate website, Metacritic, earning the “Must-Play” accolade.

“America, 1911. The Wild West is dying. When federal agents threaten his family, former outlaw John Marston is forced to pick up his guns again and hunt down the gang of criminals he once called friends,” reads the synopsis of the beloved Rockstar Games title.

In the same year that Red Dead Redemption was originally released, we were treated to its expansion, Undead Nightmare. Set in an alternate world, the Wild West is now overrun by zombies, and without giving too much away, it’s absolute chaos, in the best way.

Fans were hoping to see the return of Undead Nightmare in 2018’s Red Dead Redemption 2, but sadly, that never came to fruition. Though it did of sorts with free content events on Red Dead Online.

Speaking of that content in Red Dead Online, GTA Online is also getting its own take on the zombie apocalypse.

Later this month, Rockstar Games is releasing its next major free content update with ‘Cayo Perico Survival’, meaning that a zombie infestation is coming to the sunny climates of Los Santos.

“Your favourite island paradise just came down with a deadly case of party fever. As if a major narcotrafficking island wasn’t dangerous enough, it’s now been overrun by the undead — and maybe it’s the drugs or the tropical climate, but this time they’ve got a whole lot weirder,” reads the description of the next free content update in GTA Online.

“Cut your way through waves of undead, including conquistadors armed with muskets, Panther Trainers and their feral pets, swarms of Splitters, and more in the new Cayo Perico Survival. Fight through these hordes and make your way to the airstrip — then pray your evacuation plane doesn’t take too long.”

Judging by the first ‘Cayo Perico Survival’ trailer, it looks like this content is going to be a blast, especially if you can get a few friends together. That being said, I’m pretty sure I saw zombie cougars (the cat, not the human female variety), which were the bane of my existence in Undead Nightmare. So, yay.

‘Cayo Perico Survival’ will launch on 10 September 2025 in GTA Online on PC, PlayStation and Xbox, and will last for about a month.

As for Grand Theft Auto VI, that’s currently scheduled to launch on 26 May 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
