Grand Theft Auto V recently launched on the newest generation of consoles, marking the third round of console releases for the open-world car jacker since it first came out in 2013.

This entry in the Grand Theft Auto franchise has been so popular that developer Rockstar Games continues to update and re-release it, in favour of dedicating its resources to the long-awaited GTA 6. Its success speaks for itself. Prior to the new-gen releases, GTA V was already the second best-selling game of all time.

Despite how well GTA V has done financially, there is still something that Shawn Fonteno would change. Speaking to Say Cheese, the actor, who played protagonist Franklin Clinton, explained how he originally wanted to portray the character.

“If I could change one thing about GTA V, what would it be? I got it. I wish Franklin could’ve just been wild. Just let him loose. Because he was like a punk in a sense - he really didn’t get to just crack open.”

During the interview Fonteno gave examples of how he wished he could have played the

character of Franklin, one of three playable characters in GTA V and a young man who wanted to escape his troubled upbringing.

“The part when Trevor fell over the gate. I was laughing, and he would be like, ‘What the f**k you laughing at man?’ and I had to be like, ‘Nothing man nothing. I thought it was funny, I apologise man. Don’t take it wrong.’ When we really first shot I was like, ‘You, motherf**ker! What you think? You have to let him (Trevor) be the monster and you (Franklin) be like, ‘okay man’. You want to get out and the only way to get out is to take some s**t. So you gotta take some s**t.”

While Fonteno understands the motivation behind how laidback Franklin’s reactions were, he still wishes he could have had a few moments where he let go. “Franklin should have had at least a few motherf**king blow ups. On Trevor, on Michael. On Lamar definitely, because he got on my f**king nerves.”

Fonteno returned for the GTA Online DLC The Contract, and explained how he feels that Franklin has finally had his chance to shine. Even though it was not the way he wanted to play the character, Fonteno admitted that Rockstar has done a great job with Franklin’s story arc. “The only thing I woulda changed is if Franklin coulda been a tad bit more gangster. You feel me. But look at him now in The Contract. He ballin’ outta f**king control. So there was a reason for everything.”
