When I woke up this morning, eager to see what had happened at the Oscars while I was tucked up in bed, I can pretty much guarantee I did not expect my Twitter feed to be filled with videos, memes, and hot takes about Will Smith slapping Chris Rock in the face.
As I'm sure you're already aware - because it's literally everywhere - Rock made a joke at the expense of Smith's wife Jada Pinkett Smith, comparing her shaved hairstyle to Demi Moore's character in G.I. Jane.
What some people might not know, is that Pinkett Smith has experience with alopecia, an autoimmune disorder that effectively results in hair loss. Thus, a visibly angry Smith climbed up on stage and hit Rock in the face, shouting "keep my wife's name out of your f***ing mouth".
Naturally, this incendiary moment has blown up online, with the uncensored version (where you can hear exactly what Smith said to Rock) in particular causing all manner of debate. Some believe Smith was right to defend his wife, and that making a joke at the expense of someone who's lost their hair isn't on. Others feel the actor should have followed his wife's example and simply let it go. A very small number of people have decided their opinion on the matter means nothing and that they shouldn't post it online. We won't be hearing from them, sadly.
Rock has since confirmed he won't be pressing charges, and Smith took home the prize for Best Actor less than 20 minutes after the altercation. All told, a night I doubt either of them will forget any time soon.
