Valheim, the open world survival sandbox video game that is a runaway success on Steam, has only gone and passed another milestone. Three million copies of the game have been sold since the start of the month, which is a fabulous achievement for developer Iron Gate.

It's all sorts of splendid, basking in the success of your latest game, but being the next big thing is a precarious pickle. Getting your game in front of a crowd is like building yourself a springboard from the bits and pieces found in the recycling bin, and you've got no clue how high it'll propel you into the sky. That's only half the challenge, though. What goes up must come down. Oh, I forgot to mention - you should also be crafting some sort of parachute, or a soft and springy landing pad, or a set of wax wings so that your descent isn't punctuated with a sudden stop. In this particular metaphor, it seems like Iron Gate has constructed a medieval hot air balloon from what they took from the forests of Valheim, ensuring that the game is holding strong for the foreseeable.

And, the team is astounded at the overabundant praise for the game from critics and the community alike. Right now, there are over 60,000 "Overwhelmingly Positive" user reviews on Steam, and of course, the developer didn't have to play a trick to snag those rave reviews. Only one week after its launch, it was outperforming titles like Grand Theft Auto V, Apex Legends, and PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, and Valheim is comfortably inside the category of the 250 best reviewed games of all time on the platform. "This level of success is uncharted territory," enthused Albert Säfström, CEO of Coffee Stain Publishing. "Thankfully we have Daniel Kaplan, who was part of Minecraft's rise, on our team, as well as the truly remarkable developers at Iron Gate. We're excited to be on this journey together."

Let's bear in mind that this game is in early access, and there's even more for fans to look forward to. The next four updates will be a bumper crop of content, if I do say so myself. Firstly, there'll be the Hearth and Home additions, then Cult of the Wolf, followed by Ships and the Sea, and topped off with the Voyage to the Mistlands. Yes, that's a brand new biome. At the same time, players will enjoy various improvements to multiplayer interactions, combat, vendor inventory, locations, and a special celebrity guest.
