Procedurally generated survival game Valheim is going gangbusters - not only does it boast some absolutely enviable statistics on Steam, it's now surpassed four million copies sold since launch.

Its launch was literally at the start of this month, so this shift is astonishing. "I don't think I have really had time to contemplate it," said Iron Gate CEO Richard Svensson in the press release. "I know that players like the game a lot, but at the same time I think that I can make something even better in the future. I'm looking forward to adding more content to the game, especially working on the remaining biomes. Our current roadmap only reaches the next biome and we hope to have it done by the end of the year, but it might very well take longer depending on how smooth the development will be. I really don't want to stress the development, that never ends well."

Hear, hear. Drawing inspiration from Viking mythology, the premise of Valheim is that the player's character has died and the Valkyries are taking their spirit to the titular realm. "Besieged by creatures of chaos and ancient enemies of the gods, you are the newest custodian of the primordial purgatory," reads the listing on Steam, and players build their own longhouses for refuge and hone their skills in the wild areas to take on the things that lurk in the shadows. Exploration is key, as venturing further and further out rewards the player with more and more valuable materials. It's dangerous to go alone, to be sure, so Valheim offers co-op servers and unlimited world creation for a party of up to ten players. If this is sounding like your cup of tea, the game is £15 and there's a lot of content on its way.

On that note, players will await with enthusiasm the Hearth and Home, Cult of the Wolf, Ships and the Sea, and Voyage to the Mistlands updates, which will add much more to this plentiful survival title. I'm yet to jump into the game myself, but I do really enjoy scrolling its subreddit where players share their creations and help out fledgling warriors. You might have noticed an Eye of Sauron build doing the rounds, and there's even a wooden Millennium Falcon knocking about on one of the servers.
