Players Are Finding Mounds Of Dead, Skinned Horses In ‘Red Dead Online’

Since it left beta, 'Red Dead Online' players are running into a bizarre bug that spawns in piles of dead horses, crashing the game

Something very strange is happening in Red Dead Online. Players are discovering piles of dead, skinned horses throughout the wild west world. We're not talking one or two skinless horses - that would be weird enough - but literal mounds of them. It appears this isn't a deliberate act of horse slaughter on the part of developer Rockstar Games, but rather a bizarre bug.

You can check out one of the piles in this video below:

Red Dead Online came out of beta last week with an update that, according to the announcement blog post, brought "a range of updates and improvements that strengthen and stabilize the foundational world of the Red Dead Online experience." Clearly, that's not exactly held true.

While some players are coming across dead horses, others are finding no living creatures at all. "There are no humans and animals at all in online for me right now," writes redditor MYNAMEISHENDRICK (via Polygon). "Feeling like Will Smith in I am Legend, the world is absolutely dead but you can still hear the ambient sounds, it's really spooky. Every ten minutes a stagecoach without rider appears."

"The only people who appear are shop owners," the redditor continues. "Sometimes quest givers appear at their spot, sometimes not but missions will not start. There are no more animals, not even small rabbits. When I played yesterday there where only few NPCs on the streets in comparison to story mode but I thought they decreased the amount of people just for performance reasons but now every living being is gone. Must have something to do with the burned animal pile in Valentine."

Rockstar have been in touch to tell us that "The issue affecting some players in Red Dead Online that was causing reduced numbers of animals in session and other knock-on effects has been resolved." But it didn't say what caused the bug, we've asked for more details.
