If you've been hoping, waiting, and praying for a sequel to the massively multiplayer online shooter PlanetSide 2, I've got some pretty darn exciting news for you; Developer Daybreak Games has confirmed the Early Access battle royale spinoff PlanetSide Arena is in fact a "stepping stone" to the in-development PlanetSide 3, which will be bigger and far more ambitious than its predecessor.

In a post on the PlanetSide 2 website, executive producer Andy Sites explained that PlanetSide Arena has been designed as a way for Daybreak to connect PlanetSide 2 and PlanetSide 3, as well as serve as a place for the studio to play around with new ideas and features.

"PlanetSide Arena is intended to be the stepping stone to PlanetSide 3, which we envision expanding from the current battlefields of Auraxis, to full-fledged galactic war with empires exploring, colonizing and conquering one another within an expansive galaxy, " Sites wrote.

"We envision PlanetSide Arena as a way to allow us to link present day PlanetSide 2 and PlanetSide 3 story lines, as well as providing an opportunity to try out new features, styles of play, etc."

Sites added that Daybreak is using Arena as the platform to test new ideas rather than PlanetSide 2 because they don't want to disrupt the "very unique experience that the current, active community enjoys" in PS2.

"Trying to incorporate different game systems or styles of play or even trying out new modes would be disruptive - potentially catastrophically. We don't want to upset that balance, as it would be unfair to our current PS2 community," he wrote.

This news comes just days after Daybreak sadly announced a fresh round of layoffs at the company. Speaking on Twitter, Sites described these layoffs as a "gut punch," but promised that the team is ""still committed to continuing support and developmentt."

While his blog post made no specific mention of the layoffs, Sites did confirm that the PlanetSide 2 team will be getting some "key reinforcements, in the form of several additional programmers, designers and artists".

There's no specific release window for PlanetSide 3 just yet, unfortunately. The more immediate future will be focused on PlanetSide Arena and PlanetSide 2, while working to ensure Arena has all the critical features in place so that the game can " GTFO of Early Access as quickly as possible."
