'Okami 2' Could Finally Be Coming As Original Game's Director Teases Sequel

Don't do that. Don't give me hope.

Okami. Oh, how I love Okami. The Capcom-developed Zeldaesque adventure game released way back in 2006 and quickly went on to win over a small but dedicated cult following, thanks to its gorgeous artstyle and sprawling story inspired by Japanese mythology. I would very much count myself among that cult following.

The game tells the story the goddess Okami Amaterasu who, reborn as a white wolf, sets out on a quest to rid medieval Japan of a curse that's draining life and colour from the land. It's brimming with incredible ideas, smart puzzles, exciting combat, and memorable - if slightly inappropriate at times - characters.

If you've never played Okami, shame on you. God knows the game has been released enough times, and is currently available in HD on Xbox One, PS4, PC, and Nintendo Switch. I'm happy to wait here while you go play it. I won't go on without you. The Switch version is currently the best way to play it, by the way.

Played it? Good. See what I mean? It's a great game. Now that we've established that, we can move onto the thorny subject of a sequel. It's been well over a decade now, and Okami 2 has yet to appear. Granted, the original game never exactly set the world on fire in terms of sales, but it was surely critically beloved enough to warrant a full follow up, rather than the spinoff we actually got.

The good news is that, just days after Capcom announced its plans to revive old IPs following the success of Devil May Cry V and Resident Evil 2 Remake, Ikumi Nakamura has taken to Twitter to tease a sequel to Okami with the original game's director, Hideki Kamiya.

Ikumi, who recently left Tango Gameworks and the development of GhostWire:Tokyo after being the best and purest thing about E3 2019, decided she could whip the nerds of the world in an even deeper frenzy.

Sharing a video of her Kamiya in front of PlatinumGames logo (I imagine they were actually at the studio), Kamiya tells her that "Okami is going to be back," before Ikumi skepitically asks, "really?" My reaction was about the same when I heard the news, to be fair.

It's at this point that Kamiya reassures her, grins for the camera like a Cheshire cat, and throws us a thumbs up for our troubles. If I'm being trolled here, I do not appreciate it. I love Okami too much for this to be a piss-take.

It's worth noting of course that the power to revive Okami lies entirely with Capcom, but perhaps Ikumi slyly tagging Capcom in the tweet is her way of letting the publisher know that she's heard its plans to revive old franchises, and would like to work on a follow-up to the 2006 classic.

We'll have to wait and see, but if I can possibly get Okami 2 on PlayStation 5 from Ikumi Nakamura, Hideki Kamiya, and Platinum Games, I might just explode from joy.
