'Modern Warfare' In-Game Message Promoted PS4-Exclusive Mode On Xbox One And PC

It's a yikes from me.

It's been a fairly weird few days for Modern Warfare developer Infinity Ward. Over the weekend, the studio shared the patch notes for the popular shooter's most recent update. Patch notes which inadvertently contained what seemed to be internal messages that acknowledged fans wouldn't happy with some of the game's changes. That... wasn't a great look.

Not long after that, there was yet another Modern Warfare mixup - and this one was bound to particularly hurt those playing the game on Xbox One and PC. As reported by CharlieIntel, the in-game message of the day on November 24 for the FPS was a promotional showcase for the Special Ops Survival mode.

Why was this an issue? As you may or may not know, Spec Ops Survival was infamously confirmed before launch to be a timed exclusive mode for PlayStation 4. The mode will remain available for PS4 players, and PS4 players only, until October 2020.

Xbox One and PC gamers were, understandably, particularly unhappy with the length of the mode's exclusivity.... so seeing a message about the mode on a console where they literally can't play it must have been a serious salt in the wound situation. It probably didn't help matters that the message of the day even mentions that Survival is a PS4 exclusive.

It's unclear whether or not Spec Ops Survival being advertised on Xbox One and PC was a genuine mistake or not. If it wasn't a mistake, it's safe to say that it was a seriously ill-advised move. The timed exclusivity continues to be a real sore point for many in the Call Of Duty community. Reminding players of it would be akin to poking a sleeping bear in the eye with a very short stick.

The good news is that the majority of people on the Reddit thread don't seem too broken up about the unfortunate mishap. Most are simply pointing out that the Survival mode in Modern Warfare is rubbish and that Xbox One and PC players aren't missing much. Okay, maybe that's not good news in the strictest sense, but at least people aren't kicking off over it.

It's not all bad news for Infinity Ward, though. In addition to the internal messages that people weren't supposed to see, the hefty 20GB 1.09 update came with plenty of other goodies. Among them, we got new Spec Ops missions, the return of the fan-favourite Gun Game mode, and numerous community-requested adjustments.
